Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy that has been formulated over the last 100 years from the traditional Japanese amma massage which is a feel good, therapeutic massage.
Shiatsu literally means finger pressure and as such describes part of the therapy whereby natural body weight (finger, thumbs, elbows, forearms, feet and knees) is used in applying pressure to special points on the body.
Shiatsu is a clothed form of bodywork, given on a futon that is relaxing, preventative and remedial all in one. Its treatment of the body enhances your mental and emotional wellbeing. It works on a predictable flow of life-energy (known as Ki) that moves through the body in points and channels. If your Ki is low or imbalanced you feel weak, stiff, tense & are prone to illness.
Pressure is applied to your body’s energy channels and points, using palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees or feet to stimulate your body’s innate regenerative powers and restore balance, health, joy & wellness.
Throughout the treatment you could be positioned on your front, back, side or into a sitting position depending on your diagnosis.
You may also receive corrective stretches & rotations that are gentle rather than forceful: you release and open up rather than being extended against your will. Consequently when your body-mind is full of healthy, balanced Ki it feels great.
There is a sense of strength, lightness, warmth & being nourished that makes you become more vital as you age and more able to use the experiences of life to achieve fulfilment and meaning.
Our practitioner is an internationally experienced and qualified Shiatsu therapist and educator since 1997, specialising in Zen and Somatic Shiatsu, accredited with the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia (of which he's the Vic State Representative). He has done extensive post-graduate training throughout the world with prominent and leading shiatsu teachers and presented workshops at National Shiatsu Conferences.
